CARBONDALE (WSIL) – It’s the time of year when many people enjoy nature.
National Get Outdoors Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in June. It is a nationwide event organized by the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable and the US Forest Service.
To celebrate the big day, Giant City State Park is hosting a special event on Saturday, June 12th.
The park will have information booths in the visitor center showing how to get the most out of Mother Nature in southern Illinois. Some of these booths are the Shawnee National Forest, Green Earth, and Walk With Shawn. You will even have an activity table for kids!
“There are so many outdoor recreational opportunities here. Not only here in Giant City, but also in the Shawnee National Forest, we have wildlife sanctuaries so there are plenty of options. I just really want people to see what there is to do out here. “In southern Illinois,” says Jennifer Randolph-Bollinger, natural resource coordinator for Giant City.
Randolph-Bollinger now says the restrictions are being lifted, they want to see you. The event on Saturday is aimed at both new and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts. You can set off on this Saturday from one to four in the afternoon.
For more information, contact the visitor center at (618) 457-4836.
The Shawnee National Forest waives fees for some recreational areas on National Get Outdoors Day as well.
