The latest data from the New Mexico Department of Health shows that there are 87 confirmed cases of the Delta variant in the state. David Scrase, the state’s chief medical officer, told KOAT that a small fraction of all positive COVID-19 tests will be sequenced to see if its delta. He told KOAT that there are likely many more Delta cases in New Mexico than is reported. “We don’t sequence every positive test, we sequence a sample,” said Scrase. KOAT asked NMDOH why the state is only sequencing part of it. A spokesman for NMDOH sent this statement to KOAT: “Standard tests only give a positive or negative result – a person has COVID or not. When sequencing, we look at the entire genome. There are about 30,000 nucleotides in this genome. A variable compared to Tens of thousands of variables, so it’s more complicated. ”A spokesperson added that NMDOH does not have all the resources to sequence every COVID positive test for Delta.
