Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has teamed up with Leave No Trace Ireland to bring out an outdoor recreational fishing guide based on the 7 principles of Leave No Trace.
As the steward of our natural fishing resources, anglers can read this quick guide on how to minimize the impact of their fishing trip on the environment.
The guide is also a useful checklist for anyone who wants to enjoy the great outdoors. The 7 principles are important reminders of how we can reduce the impact on nature. You are:
- Plan ahead and prepare
- Be considerate of others
- Respect farm animals and wildlife
- Travel and camping on permanent ground
- Leave what you find
- Dispose of waste properly
- Minimize the effects of fire
Suzanne Campion of the IFI said: “320,000 Irish love to fish in Ireland and this guide will help them in their role in protecting the environment.
“Anglers are important stewards of the waters they fish. The guide we created with Leave No Trace Ireland describes what to consider before going on a fishing trip.
“The fishing community has a role to play in protecting the environment in which they fish and in promoting it so that future generations can use our fishing resources.”
Maura Kiely, CEO of Leave No Trace Ireland, said she was delighted to be partnering with this new guide, adding, “We have adapted the 7 principles of Leave No Trace to act as a checklist for anglers when they move on Go on a fishing trip.
“Anglers care about the environment they fish in and they understand the need for healthy aquatic systems for fish populations to thrive. The guide will help anglers make choices that will minimize the impact on nature while fishing. “
