Bryce Merrill has been the manager of the acclaimed Provo Rec Center for more than eight years. Now he’s bringing what he’s learned to Orem.
On Monday, Orem announced that Merrill would be the city’s new leisure director. He replaces Karl Hirst, who retired at the end of March.
“Bryce has been a great manager at the Rec Center for eight years,” said Scott Henderson, Provo director of parks and recreation. “He is a great talent and we are happy that he is making progress in his career.”
Merrill will take up his new position at Orem on May 17th. He will complete multiple programs and sit on a handful of recreational boards and committees at Orem, including the new fitness center.
“I am pleased to announce Bryce Merrill as the city’s new Recreational Director. Bryce’s experience in the recreation includes the past eight years as manager of the Provo Recreation Center, three years previously as Leisure Coordinator at Salt Lake County Recreation, and three more years as Aquatics and Program Manager at Metro Dallas YMCA, “said Jamie Davidson, city manager for Orem.
“I would like to thank many in the department and beyond who have been involved in the recruiting effort. I have had the opportunity to interact with many who have worked with and worked for Bryce over the past week and I feel very confident That his background of experience, energy and focus will serve Orem very well as he takes responsibility for the Leisure Department, ”added Davidson.
Brenn Bybee, the city’s assistant manager, said that because of his position, Merrill is responsible for the outdoor recreational programs, the Senior Friendship Center, the city representative at Sleepy Ridge Golf Course, and the outdoor pool.
Merrill will be over nine full-time employees and hundreds of part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers from lifeguards to umpires.
Bybee said he was highly recommended. “We heard good things about him. He has a proven track record. “
“Bryce is innovative. He’s checking all the boxes, ”Bybee said. “He’ll do a great job.”
In addition to his energy and enthusiasm, Bybee noted that Merrill is tech savvy and that his philosophy is exactly what Orem was looking for.
Merrill doesn’t have to worry too much about the city parks, as Orem’s parks are under the supervision of the public works division, unlike Provo which has a parks and recreation division. However, Merrill will still be very busy.
His job includes making sure the city’s outdoor leagues and other groups that need fields to play have what they need. That alone could keep him busy, according to Bybee.
