Now, through October, Wright is renting the property through the Historical Society, which has since moved.

“There’s definitely a lot of history here,” said Brad Wann, executive director of Abingdon Adventures.

“It’s just a cool building with the skylights,” Wann said. “And I’ve had people come in and tell me they had a grandfather who caught the train and went to WWII.”

Tonya Triplett, the city’s director of economic development, said the deal is “a great addition”.

“With an outdoor recreation and more than 30% traffic growth on the Virginia Creeper Trail, Abingdon Adventures will be a great addition to downtown Abingdon,” said Triplett.

Wright has been running bicycle and outdoor stores in Damascus since 1998. These include Sundog Outfitters and Adventure Damascus.

“What we’re doing in Damascus is we’re sort of a central tour guide,” said Wright, who lives in Damascus.

Abingdon Adventures is largely laden with t-shirts made by Wright’s t-shirt shop in Damascus.

You can also buy bicycles and cycling equipment.
